Component certification

The market for energy-efficient buildings is growing rapidly worldwide, increasing the demand for reliable, high-performance components. Often, claims are made about the energy efficiency of products that are not borne out in practice. The Passive House Institute certifies energy-efficient components according to international standards and ensures that they fulfil strict criteria for efficiency, comfort and hygiene in the following categories:

  • Building services (HVAC)
  • Transparent building envelope
  • Building systems and components

Reliability

Certified components have been thoroughly tested and assessed by the experienced engineers at the Passive House Institute. This ensures that you can rely on the accuracy and consistency of important performance values such as thermal transmittance, airtightness and hygiene when designing your building projects.

Great compliance

The use of certified components makes it easier for you to achieve the requirements of the Passive House or EnerPHit standard. This allows you to reduce both the time and complexity involved in carrying out calculations, creating energy balance models and certifying the building.

Product variety

Over 1,000 certified Passive House components are currently available. They are listed in the online component database and their performance values can be easily imported into energy balancing calculations in the PHPP tool.

Project support

Upon request, the component certification team is happy to create "PHPP input data sheets" for non-certified components to provide you with realistic characteristic values for your building certification (more details).

Unique selling point

The Passive House Institute's "Certified Component" seal is a trustworthy, internationally recognised quality mark that helps you make your products stand out in a highly competitive market.

Enhanced visibility

All building components certified by the Passive House Institute are published in the online component database together with their key performance values. They are also integrated into the PHPP tool, meaning that building designers can easily select certified components and quickly import the required performance values into their energy balancing calculations.

Ideal integration

By certifying your components, you give building designers, constructors and project developers the certainty that your products can be seamlessly integrated into Passive House projects as they fulfil the desired energy efficiency targets.

Product optimisation and consulting

The component certification team is happy to support you with personalised consulting and simulations in your efforts to energetically and economically optimise your products. Thanks to our extensive knowledge of the high-energy-efficiency building sector, we can point out specific gaps and potential in the current market and thus facilitate your access to this building sector.

Project support for building designers: PHPP input data sheets

Upon request, the component certification team can create PHPP input data sheets for non-certified components to provide you with realistic characteristic values for your building certification. This is possible for all categories of the thermal envelope, such as windows or doors, but also for special building components whose characteristic values have to be determined in a 3D simulation. Here, the calculation principles and boundary conditions correspond to those of the component certification guidelines.

In addition, special situations or combinations - also for certified components - can be requested, for example for the determination of installation parameters or component combinations (e.g. balcony system with door exit, window with shading system, etc.).

Further details on the procedure

Our team can create PHPP input datasheets for the following categories in accordance with the certification criteria:

•    Window frames and fixed glazing, as well as system sections such as mullions, sill profiles, etc.
•    Skylights and roof windows
•    Window installation systems and fall protection systems
•    Thermal bridges at glass edges
•    Doors and french doors
•    Sliding doors
•    Sun shading systems
•    Installation situations as needed
•    Façade systems (opaque, translucent, transparent)
•    Pillars and balconies

In the case of transparent building components, it is not the reference values of the glazing that are evaluated in accordance with the certification criteria, but the specific properties of the glazing used in the respective project in order to obtain concrete values. The Passive House Institute indicates the thermal characteristic values and a climate recommendation on the data sheets.

The data sheets contain all the information relevant for building certification, such as heat transfer coefficients, surface temperatures, materials and boundary conditions, as well as profile dimensions and allocations. These are attached to the certification report. If necessary, after consultation with the respective certifier, boundary conditions can be adapted to suit building requirements (e.g. temperature profiles, boundary conditions for hygiene tests for special buildings such as swimming pools, underground car parks, etc.).

Components for which no explicit criteria have been published are evaluated in accordance with recognised standards and codes of practice. For example, this applies to:

•    Suspension systems
•    System gear trays, electrical sockets, mounting elements, installation housings
•    Support systems for air conditioning units or photovoltaic systems
•    Beams, flanking insulation
•    Insulation holders and dowels
•    End rails and system components
•    Brackets and penetrations
•    More upon request

We are happy to support you with this service. Please send your request along with a sketch and the e-mail subject "PHPP Input Data Sheets" to components@passiv.de.
