Massachusetts has adopted a new building energy code that mandates Passive House Certification for large multifamily buildings in jurisdictions that adopt it, which to date include Cambridge, Brookline, Somerville and Watertown with likely dozens more cities and towns adopting in the coming months. The mandate is part of a shift in focus away from overall EUI as the key indicator of building performance, toward Thermal Energy Demand Intensity or TEDI. Paul Ormond, Engineer, Massachusetts DOER

Paul Ormond is an engineer at the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) which is the energy office for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Paul works on the commonwealth’s efforts to improve building codes and energy policy, particularly as they relate to decarbonization of the built environment. Paul is also the course developer and instructor for the “Decarbonizing the Building Sector” course at Harvard

University Extension School. Paul is a licensed Massachusetts professional engineer and a graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
